Losing a tradition

I remember when I was young, we will not know if its Shawal or still Ramadhan until we hear the announcement on TV. Thus, after the Maghrib prayers, we would wait eagerly by the TV waiting for the annoncement. If the moon is sighted, tomorrow will be Shawal, meaning its Eidul Fitri. If not, it will fasting for another day, much to our disapointment. These days, the tradition is gone because the dates are known already.
